Taipei to Bring Optical Fibers to HomesMayor Hau Lung-bin attended the contract signing press event for the citywide “Fiber to the Home” (FTTH) project on January 3. Hau announced that Taipei will be targeting a fiber-optic coverage rate of 80% by 2015, to make it one of the leading cities to bring the fiber optical network to local households.

In stark contrast to the Singaporean and Australian governments which invested over NT$30 billion and NT$700 billion respectively into fiber optic deployment, Taipei’s approach requires no additional funding on the part of the city government, noted the mayor, since the optical network is deployed along existing sewer and rainwater tunnels.

Hau took the opportunity to thank former Taipei mayors for clearing the way for the ambitious broadband project, citing their efforts in expanding the city’s drainage construction. The endeavor helped lay the groundwork for the deployment of fiber cables totaling 3,000 km.

With the implementation of the FTTH project, residents of Neihu, Songshan, and Nangang districts will be the first to enjoy 100M broadband connection at a monthly rate 10% below the average market price by mid-2013.

In addition, disadvantaged groups–middle-and-low-income families, disabled individuals, and members of indigenous communities – will be eligible for a 50% reduction in Internet fees.
